Controlling a device with your mind. Powering your home with the energy of your own activities. These are two of the developments that experts at IBM think will become reality within the next five years. The technology company has released its latest "5 in 5" report. The experts think people will soon be able to control many electronic devices simply by using their minds. Scientists at IBM and other companies are researching ways to do this in a field of science known as bioinformatics. They say people will soon have a way to just think about calling or e-mailing someone in order to make it happen. Bernie Meyerson is IBM's vice president of innovation. He says the idea is for "something with really deep capability so that a person, for instance, a quadriplegic, a paraplegic can actually utilize brainwaves to make things happen and basically run their own lives independently." Another prediction is a way for people to power their homes and offices using energy from activities like walking or running. Still another prediction: passwords could soon become a thing of the past. IBM says developments in biometric technology could soon make passwords unnecessary. Some of the most common biometrics used to identify people are fingerprints, face and voice recognition, and iris scans. The iris is the colored part of the eye. Bernie Meyerson says this technology will soon be more widely used by money machines and other devices. Another prediction from the experts at International Business Machines: better technology to prevent unwanted e-mail. The fifth prediction on IBM's 5 in 5 list is an end to the "digital divide" between those who have technology and those who do not. Bernie Meyerson says: "We anticipate within five years, better than eighty percent coverage of the world's population by cellular to smartphones. At that point, imagine having, for instance, the ability to speak openly with anybody anywhere, anytime and any language -- real time translation. Literally, the old 'Star Trek' idea of the universal translator coming to be, and how the world would change if there were that kind of communication and openness."And that's the VOA Special English Technology Report. A discovery in a laboratory could help lead to new generation of drought-resistant crops. Drought conditions cause plants to produce a stress hormone called abscisic acid. This chemical activates a set of protein molecules called receptors. These receptors then activate a series of changes to help the plant survive. The natural reaction of the receptors is to close so-called guard cells on and inside the leaves. That closure decreases water loss and stops the plant from growing to save water during a drought. Researchers say they have discovered a way to "supercharge," or increase, this reaction. Sean Cutler at the University of California, Riverside, led the team. The scientists engineered abscisic acid receptors that can be turned on at will and stay on. They tested hundreds of versions of engineered receptor genes until they found ones that worked right together. The team worked with Arabidopsis, a plant often used in experiments. The results recently appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Professor Cutler says testing the new receptors in the field may take several years. He also points out that drought is not the only cause of plant stress. What would be stressful for a crop plant is not stressful for a cactus, for example, because the cactus has evolved to live in dry deserts. In another development, scientists have produced a new system for analyzing genetic markers in rice plants. A genetic marker is a DNA sequence with a known location. It can help scientists identify nearby genes linked to individual qualities, or traits. Anna McClung and Georgia Eizenga are genetic scientists with the United States Department of Agriculture. Their new system will let researchers genetically "fingerprint" rice varieties and gain a better understanding of the markers. Until now, breeders have been limited to using perhaps two hundred markers. But modern technology lets scientists identify differences throughout the plant's genome, its genetic map. Ms. McClung says that means the ability to identify new genes that control biological pathways. These pathways in the plant may control traits like yield, disease resistance and nutritional quality. The finding could make it easier in the future for farmers to grow "designer rice," rice bred to meet their specific needs. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. Nearly a billion and a half people, mainly in Asia and Africa, were living without electricity in two thousand nine. That latest count from the International Energy Agency was an improvement. In Asia, three out of four people in developing countries had electricity in rural areas. So did almost everyone in cities. But in Africa the rate was less than seventy percent in cities, and just one-fourth of the people in rural areas. There are many efforts to find low-cost ways to light homes. One idea is a "water bulb." This system has recently been used to brighten more than one hundred homes in the Korogocho settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. These included the home of Madina Muhsin's family. Members of a youth group installed the water bulb. First, they filled a two-liter plastic bottle with water and a little bleach. Next, they cut a hole in the metal roof. They pressed the bottle halfway into the hole. Then they used silicone caulk to seal around it to prevent rain from coming in. In no time, the home was lit with about fifty to sixty watts' worth of light. The combination of water and bleach refracts light from the sun and a full moon. The bleach keeps the water clear. Madina Muhsin, like many of her neighbors, was spending a lot on kerosene to light her home. Now, she says she will save almost half of her weekly income. Her son Abbas can now read a book at home in the middle of the day. Veronica Wanjiru and her two children also have a water bulb in their home. She says her older son had to repeat a grade in school because he could not get his homework done when their home was dark. She says, "I've seen a big difference, especially with my children's education. If they're given homework, they can finish it on time. And they don't have to wait for me to come and light the candle or go outside and do their studies outside so that they can finish their homework." In the Philippines, a nonprofit group called My Shelter Foundation has used a similar low-cost lighting solution in thousands of homes. The project is called "A Liter of Light." The head of the group, Illac Diaz, says the idea is better than candles and kerosene, and offers a great new use for old plastic soda bottles: "It's safer. It's healthier. It's brighter, and the funny thing is the light bulb actually comes from the place you'd least expect it, which is the trash bin. So it's the cheapest light bulb in the world." Britain's Daily Mail recently published a list of ten "Black Collars," citing research by the Brookings Institute, specialist China publications and the Sunday Times.

The list includes the former head of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China and now appointed governor of Hebei Province, Zhang Qingwei.

Also Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile phone network, with 650 million users. Critics say the company makes much of its profit through charges that would be illegal in other countries.

And Zhang Guoqing, the general manager of China North Industries Group—China's largest arms maker. The company has been subject to sanctions for suspected missile sales to Iran and weapons sales to Libya's Colonel Gaddafi.

What these "Black Collars" have in common is that they all hold high positions in the business world and in the Chinese Communist Party. Many are provincial governors as well as executives in China's often state-owned businesses.

[Caoan Jushi, Economic and Political Commentator]:
"When they have a CCP official background, they will acquire more fortune during business transactions. Then, they use the obtained fortune to impact the execution of policies. They are officials and businessmen."

Economist Qi Yanchen says that China's un-democratic political system has led to this narrow concentration of power and wealth.

"From a technical level, China's politics are definitely not electoral politics. It is appointed politics. Central government leaders share power with those who they will benefit from."

Some of these "Black Collars," such as Chen Yuan, descend from hardliners within the regime. Chen's father was one of the high level figures who urged the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. Chen is set to have an influence on China's next generation of leaders.

A breakthrough has been made in the latest attempt to create an invisibility cloak. It's something that's long been coveted by Harry Potter fans and Sci-Fi geeks alike.

But before you get your hopes up...the cloak is well...a lot different than the one donned by Harry.
"The State Column says researchers used a method called "plasmonic cloaking" to hide an 18 centimeter cylindrical tube from microwaves."
Ortwin Hess is a professor of metamaterials at Imperial College London. He says for BB
"There are some limits on where these things can be applied, but nevertheless it's really, really interesting and fundamental indeed."
Co-lead investigator of the experiment, Andrea Alu, says one future use for the method would be to give warplanes "super-stealth" status.
"What we are thinking about is not necessarily cloaking the whole warplane but some hot spots, a part such as the tailplane that you would want to cloak because it reflects most of the energy (from microwave radar).
So while the technology may be a breakthrough...Professor Alu says we won't see the real benefits for a few years.

Electronics were among the most requested gifts of the twenty-eleven Christmas holiday season in the United States. Jim Barry from the Consumer Electronics Association says tablet computers were the most popular electronic gift. Laptop computers were second. Jim Barry says the iPad continued to lead the way in the tablet market. Apple released its iPad 2 in March. The company is expected to release the iPad 3 in twenty-twelve. "Tablet computers are the top of the list of what folks said they were going to buy this year. And probably north of eighty percent of the tablets being sold up until now have been Apple iPads." But he says the tablet market is starting to change. There are now more choices and less costly tablets available. These include the new Kindle Fire from Amazon.com. Jim Barry says e-readers were number three on his group's survey of holiday gift wishes, and that came as a surprise to more than a few people. "Some folks thought that the popularity and success of the tablet computer would mean sales of e-book readers would go down. Well, that hasn't happened. Sales of e-book readers have more than doubled this year. We're buying lots more. The leaders there continue to be the Kindle from Amazon and the Nook from Barnes and Noble, along with the e-reader from Sony." Amazon released its Kindle Fire just in time for Christmas. The new Kindle is a touchscreen tablet. Unlike the earlier e-reader, this one is in color and lets users explore the Web. The Kindle Fire sells for one hundred ninety-nine dollars. This is several hundred dollars less than the iPad, but about the same as people paid for the Kindle 3G Wireless in twenty-ten. So the big question on a lot of people's minds in twenty-eleven was whether or not to wait for the price to come down. As Jim Barry put it: "This is the challenge of the early adopter. You know, one of the great things about consumer electronics is that the prices get lower as the stuff gets better. And that's not true of automobiles or furniture or houses, and so forth. So as the prices get lower, if you bought earlier you may feel a little bit of that 'well, I wish I had waited.'" He says falling prices are one of the reasons why consumer electronics do relatively well, even in a difficult economy. Several schools in Stockholm are going organic and avoiding processed foods in their quest for feeding children healthy food. A recent Swedish report says additives in red processed meat increase pancreatic cancer.

A recent Swedish study published in the British Journal of Cancer shows that the additives in red processed meat increase the risk of pancreatic cancer and the more you eat the bigger the risk.

But the Katarina Södra School in Stockholm doesn't want to give their pupils food with additives and semi finished products and therefore cooks the food by themselves.

Carola Magnusson, the founder of Carolas Eko, a natural foods catering company, serves around 2500 healthy meals to pupils every day.

Carola says that industrially-processed food contains a lot of unhealthy additives.

[Carola Magnusson, Founder of Carolas Eko]:
"When it comes out in the end they have to add a lot of things to make it look and taste and feel like real food and that contains a lot of stuff that I don't want to serve to the children."

The school serves freshly baked bread. They peel the onions themselves.
Even the bullion and curry paste is prepared by them.

There are no semi-finished products in the food.

And the kids we talked to are big fans of the menu.

"I have heard from other schools that they do not have such good food. We have great food."

The city of Stockholm has a goal that at least 15% of the food in schools should be organic.

Katarina Södra School is unique with 70% of the food that is organic and most of it is locally produced in Sweden.

" That the food is grown organically, cooking from scratch but without additives is to me a guarantee that we give children the best we can give them, it is important with food as well as knowledge."

Now your fridge and your phone can be best buds. At the Consumer Election Show, LG unveiled its new Smart ThinQ line of household products that can communicate with your smartphone or your smartTV. Included in that line -- refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, and even a vacuum.

The new LG device getting the most attention-- a refrigerator that doubles as a dietician. Not only will it keep you eating greens, the futuristic fridge can recommends recipes based on what's inside, it can tell you when the milk goes sour and keep profiles for each member of the family.

And as Geek Sugar explains -- it might just help you lose those holiday pounds by factoring in your health.

"This feature will help you build a personal profile, then suggests recipes, daily and weekly meal plans, menus, and food selections based on age, gender, weight, height, and BMI."

And what about all those crumbs from all those cupcakes you've been trying to hide from your Big Brother fridge -- well LG's Hom-Bot, which is controlled via your smartphone -- can zoom in to pick up the dust. The vacuum uses a robotic camera for an eye, and you can vacuum virtually from the comfort of your couch as if it were an Army drone of cleanliness.

But Engadget reports, though the news is worth some quiet applause, the appliances come with some key limitations.

"It's just hard to fathom how useful they are without a humanoid robot capable of moving the finished wash into the dryer or putting the porkroast in the oven. And while being able to look up the contents of your fridge as you enter the supermarket sounds compelling, knowing that the owner has to manage the list manually (there's no UPC code scanner and RFID is still just a dream) tarnishes our enthusiasm quite a bit."

A writer for CNET says this is yet another sci-fi fantasy coming true --

"All of this gets us just that much closer to the Jetsons-style home we secretly covet. We still have to wait a little longer for pricing and availability information on the new line, however."

Bernhard Rieger wants to use carbon dioxide to produce plastics. The key to the technology will be using the proper catalyst. Catalysts are substances that help facilitate chemical reactions. Bernhard Rieger believes that the chemicals industry is at the threshold of a profound revolution - the switch from petroleum chemistry to carbon dioxide chemistry.

But how much is a euro really worth - in stores and in people's minds? Made in Germany decided to find out.For many, 1-euro shops are synonymous with junk. But the Euroshop company hopes to dispel this image. Its stores are well-kept and can be found on ritzy shopping streets—like the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. Euroshop already has 170 stores and regularly opens new ones. Germans seem to like the concept, but how does a 1-euro store generate a turnover of over 100 million euros? What do customers get for a euro and is it worth the money? How many euros do the store's employees earn? Is the euro now a junk currency? Claudia Laszczak went on site to find out.
