Growing up on the salt-stained decks of his grandfather Jacques Cousteau's ships, Calypso and Alcyone, Fabien Cousteau, third-generation ocean explorer, documentary filmmaker and environmental ambassador, was destined to further his family's legacy by exploring and protecting our water planet's wondrous and endangered marine habitats. Fabien most recently launched Plant A Fish, a new nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower communities to become involved with responsible 're-planting' of key marine species in distressed bodies of water around the world. Initial targeted projects in 2010-2011 will include responsible re-planting of mangroves in South Florida, oysters in the New York Harbor, sea turtles in El Salvador and corals in the Maldives. Fabien has garnered praise and media attention for his environmental advocacy work, including mentions in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post as well as appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, National Geographic, major broadcast networks, and as a regular guest/contributor to NBC's Today Show. What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBrooklyn, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBrooklyn event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
