Patients suffering from heart valve disease in emerging third world countries face a sad reality. Replacements in the form of mechanical or tissue valves address the medical landscapes of the developed world, and offer little assistance to the sufferers who cannot afford ongoing medical treatment and medication, or have the skills of a competent and experienced cardiothoracic surgeon to perform the procedure.
Studies and collaboration with surgeons from across the world have facilitated the development and design of a heart valve replacement made of a polymer and metal combination, offering extended life and the ability to address sufferers in all nations. Manufacturing technology never used in this space before, together with innovative approaches to the surgical methods have allowed for an exciting design with a South African flair.
