Is Internet Explorer 9 a Game Changer?

Windows users can now hit the refresh button. Microsoft has launched Internet Explorer 9. IE9’s facelift includes faster loading, and new features - like pinning sites to the desktop. But has it already gotten smoked by the likes of Firefox and Chrome?
CNET says IE9 fixes a major problem notorious with Internet Explorer - crashing.
“...improved process isolation, which prevents individual tab crashes from killing the whole browser. There’s also an option for automatic updates as you see in Chrome or Opera. Performance and Web standards have been perennial stumbling blocks for IE, but that actually really changes in IE9.”
And a Daily Tech writer adds IE9 should strengthen Microsoft’s hold in the office.
“Internet Explorer remains the king of business browsers in terms of manageability, security, and reliability. When you factor in that many business have built their portals' web code to run optimally in Internet Explorer, IE 9 gains yet more of an advantage.”
Microsoft announced IE9 would not be available for Windows XP users. CNET says that’s 40 to 50 percent of the world’s computers, and Microsoft is abandoning them.
“Microsoft's official explanation ... is that the graphics card-powered hardware acceleration that helps the browser load pages faster doesn't work properly with the device drivers on Windows XP.”
And a writer for PC World says IE9 is more 20th Century than 21st, which could keep it from becoming successful.
"With the Chrome Web Store up and running, and Mozilla building its own app system, IE9 risks falling behind on the fertile ground of helping users discover and access useful Web services."
Finally, Tech news site GigaOM tested IE9 against not just Firefox and Chrome but also upstart Opera, and says Microsoft is still operating under an old paradigm.
“[A]lthough Microsoft has made a bit of fuss about IE9 supporting newer standards like HTML5 (even providing some online demos to show off the browser’s HTML5 chops), it’s actually lagging some way behind its competitors here, although none of them scores perfectly.”
