Human Trafficking in Asia
Research indicates that human trafficking today is among the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. According to the U.S. Department of State's most recent Trafficking in Persons Report, an estimated 800,000 men, women, and children are trafficked across international borders every year. Many Asian countries are both the primary sources and destinations for the victims of trafficking.
On Nov. 2, 2010, chief of party of The Asia Foundation's Counter Trafficking in Persons program in Cambodia, Nandita Baruah, joined Luis CdeBaca, ambassador-at-large at the U.S. Department of State's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, UNIFEM adviser on Global Migration; Alyse Nelson, president of Vital Voices; and Mark Taylor, senior coordinator for Reports and Political Affairs, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, U.S. Department of State, for a panel co-hosted by The Asia Foundation and Asia Society in New York, to discuss approaches to protect victims, bring traffickers to justice, and prevent trafficking.
