New Copernicus satellite launch to provide climate change data
The first of six satellites that will supply environmental and security data is set to launch tomorrow. As part of the multi-billion-euro Copernicus Earth Observation Project, the satellite will be sent into Earth's orbit from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. It will be used to monitor sea ice, oil spills and land use, and to respond to emergencies like floods and earthquakes. The satellite carries an advanced radar instrument which will provide high-quality images of the Earth's surface. Copernicus could also offer commercial opportunities for us on earth - like delivering data to farmers on soil moisture or pest infestation or helping oil companies decide where to drill new wells. According to the European Space Agency, the mission will image the entire Earth every six days and has a minimum lifespan of seven years. Report by Claire Lomas.
