Fossils Of The World's Largest Rabbit Discovered

Paleontologists working near Spain on the island of Minorca (May-norka) found fossils of what they're calling the world's largest bunny. Officially named Nuralagus rex this big bunny weighed in at more than 26 pounds leaving quite a difference between it and your average European rabbit. The King of Rabbits' size isn't the only trait setting it apart, the discoverers tell National Geographic what's different.
"'...N. rex would be a rather clumsy rabbit walking,' ... 'Imagine a beaver out of water.'... the giant rabbit's 'short and stiff' vertebral column meant it couldn't bunny hop. ... [and] the animal had small eyes and stubby ears—a far cry from modern rabbit ears..."
Clumsy and lazy. Scientists say the bunny's lack of predators on Minorca was a main contributor to its massive size.
"'...he was a very calm and peaceful animal that moved with slow, but powerful, movements.'"
Discovery
"The rabbit king lived approximately 3-5 million years ago and may be one of the oldest known cases of the 'island rule' in mammals. Simply put, the island rule states that when on islands, big animals will get smaller and small animals will get bigger."

Paleontologist Josep Quintana found his first N. Rex bone when he was 19 and initially mistook it for one from a turtle.
And he tells LiveScience the fossils, shown here, weren't easy to get to.

"'I needed four years to recover a good sample of N. rex bones because they were in very hard red stone,' ... 'it was necessary to use some hundreds of liters of acetic acid, a very concentrated vinegar - very hard and patient work! But it was worthwhile, of course.'"
The researchers say N. Rex arrived on the island by land during a drought and a drop in temperature probably led to its demise. Quintana says he'd like to see the rabbit become a mascot for Minorca to bring more tourism to the region
