SocialEyes Changing Video Chats?

Imagine being able to video chat with all your friends around the world -- all at once... Think it can’t be done? SocialEyes says think again.
The brand-new start-up allows users to sync their Facebook profiles to enable multi-way video chats with their friends, allowing up to 6 people to chat with each other. Social Eyes also offers a way to leave a video message for your friends who aren’t online -- something unique to the world of video chats.
The company of 10 employees has already raised more than $5 million from investors, including Seattle-based Ignition Partners. Co-founder and company chairman Rob Glaser says he sees SocialEyes becoming a key element in business relations based on how his company is already using it.
“It’s amazing. This is one of the tightest teams I’ve ever worked with and I give SocialEyes a huge amount of credit for that ... I live in Seattle, the company is based in San Francisco, and I feel more connected to this team, and I feel like I know everybody on the team even though there are two or three members of the team I’ve never met face-to-face.”
So now what? Tech analysts are predicting great things for the start-up, but Forbes reminds us, this is just the beginning.
“SocialEyes has a long way to go for success, primarily in attracting people and getting them happy over what amounts to a new form of group communications. Make no mistake, however, it is coming.”
And remember Chat-roulette? A writer for Wired reflects on that crash and burn idea and points out a potential similarity in SocialEyes -- the users who reveal a little too much for the eyes to handle.
“...though they may not be the rough and random surprises of Chat-roulette, opportunities for sexual contacts abound. (One can only imagine Charlie Sheen’s socialeyes dashboard.)”
Despite the hype, a writer for GigaOm points out SocialEyes’ biggest threat -- Facebook. Even though Social Eyes connects its users through Facebook, GigaOm says the social networking giant probably isn’t far behind in video chatting.
“The biggest name to watch is Facebook, which is likely to jump into the video chat space at some point. It recently upgraded its messaging system, and the next obvious step would be video chat, which could undercut services like SocialEyes and other apps built on Facebook.”
Social Eyes says they hope to keep the service free but plan to offer premium options in the future.
