Korean researchers have developed a new way to cool down cities .... without the need for energy-sapping air conditioners.
The all-natural system utilizes plant-based mats to ensure cooler and greener urban centers.
Kim Minji shows us how this eco-friendly method works. It's sizzling here in the heart of Seoul, with the scorching midday sun looming overhead. The stubborn heat wave continues to make for hot and stuffy conditions, especially in urban areas.
The heat emanating from cement sidewalks can reach up to 39 degrees Celsius, while the air temperature around vehicles can rise to a blistering 42 degrees.
But Mother Nature knows how to stay cool, as mercury readings are the lowest near trees and gardens.
Taking advantage of this natural resistance to the elements, Korean researchers have developed so-called "plant mats," which have shown to lower surface temperatures by at least three degrees and reduce carbon dioxide concentrations in the area by a factor of five.
The special mats are made of a fabric that's been infused with moss and flowering plants known as stonecrops.
"The roots are able to cover an area in a shorter span of time. Therefore, it's a simpler and more mobile process. Compared to existing mats, the roots are also able to take hold much faster."
The plant mats can also be transplanted efficiently to other areas, and give local botanical growers a boost in revenue.
"By utilizing this process in the construction of roofs, for example, research shows that it can reduce the thermal heat within city areas. There have been very high expectations since the results came out.
The research project was carried out by Korea's Rural Development Administration.
They hope that these plant mats can also mitigate heavy rain damage to buildings and eventually play a key role in mainstream urban planning.
