Korea is taking inspiration from Napa Valley in the U.S. and Food Valley in the Netherlands in a bid to turn itself into a gateway for global food exports in Northeast Asia. The half-a-billion dollar project is expected to provide a new source of economic growth and job creation. Kim Min-ji reports. Korea has set its sights on the food industry as a new growth engine for the economy,... and it is seeking to develop itself into a hub for the Northeast Asian food market. The Korea National Food Cluster, or "Foodpolis," as it′s called, is part of the Korean government′s plan to build a food-industrial complex... that will facilitate business and research activities... and become a convenient gateway for global exports. Located in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do province,... the site is near major air and sea ports,... and can easily be accessed by the capital via bullet train. And with its proximity to major markets, like China and Japan,... the government expects the 500-million dollar project to have a substantial economic impact. "The Korea National Food Cluster is expected to generate over 13-billion dollars in sales,... facilitate 3-billion dollars in exports... and create 22-thousand new jobs a year when it reaches full operation in 2020." The government has so far signed agreements with over 100 local and foreign companies,... and plans to lure more businesses and investors with incentives, such as tax exemptions and state subsidies. While the European food market has been on the decline,... the Northeast Asian market with a population of 1-point-5 billion is expected to emerge as a new major food market accounting for over 30-percent of the global industry. The government says that with the initiative, it is creating an environment for potential investors to use Korea as a springboard for international expansion.
