To alleviate water pollution in the rivers of Rome, Italian designers Sara Bianchetti and Leonardo Graziano have designed a floating device that doubles as a water filter and trash bin. Powered by an electro-mechanical system, Jbin consists of a communication cap, a body for trash collection, paddles, a wire and an anchor. The flow of the water causes the paddles to rotate a helix inside the bin, creating a vortex that traps trash gathered in the river. Polluted water is next purified by bacteria inside a filter. With LED lights on top, the device can also act as a lighting device. A change in the color of the lights indicates that the bin is full or that parts need replacing. When air is pumped in, the device rises to the surface, allowing for a cleanup. The Jbin’s tripod emits ultrasonic sounds to deter fish from approaching. Apart from the environmental benefits, its creators believe the cleaner will also help create jobs as workers would be needed to help with maintenance.
