The number of patent requests worldwide shot up last year. A study by the World Intellectual Property Organization shows,... requests were up 9 percent across the globe... compared to a year earlier. China had the lion′s share at 32 percent of the global total, followed by the U.S. and Japan. Korea came in fourth on the list at 8 percent. Patent filings are generally considered a yardstick for measuring the strength of innovation and competitiveness of a country. Globally, over 2-point-5 million patent applications were filed last year.
