A group of engineers from one of Korea's leading technology schools has developed the country's first foldable compact electric car.
You heard that right: a foldable car.
The high-tech vehicle hopes to tackle various transportation problems, such as reducing pollution and cutting back on the nation's dependence on foreign oil.
Our Paul Yi reports. This state-of-the-art vehicle provides a glimpse into the future of transportation here in Korea and perhaps even the world.
The eco-friendly car aims to minimize its footprint environmentally as well as on the streets, with purely electric motors and a body that's able to fold in half.
Dubbed the Armadillo-T after the animal it mimics, the vehicle weighs less than 500 kilograms and measures just over 1-point-6 meters in length when folded, which allows for three of them to occupy a typical parking space.
The ultra-compact car was developed by Professor Seo In-soo and his research team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, or KAIST.
Seo claims that the vehicle can reach up to 60 kilometers an hour and travel 100 kilometers on a single charge.
"We designed a structure that would be able to fold once without lifting the main battery. In addition, we set out to create a design that minimizes the use of energy while maximizing the mileage of the vehicle."
Utilizing cutting-edge technology, the so-called armadillo car is remotely folded and can even be controlled via a smartphone application.
In order to make room for two passengers, the central engine was re-engineered into four independent in-wheel motors and the side-mirrors were replaced with surround-view cameras.
"One of the core technologies we developed was equipping the motors in the wheels in order to make room inside the car."
The Korean homegrown foldable car hopes to advance similar electric car efforts in the United States and Europe, while ways to efficiently mass produce the vehicles are being studied.
Pending a revision of current traffic laws, Professor Seo hopes to see the cutting-edge vehicle make its first public appearance on local roads in the near future.
