Skills and the City: Owning the Future
Panelists: PTECH Principal Rashid Davis, Dr. Constantine E. Kontokosta, Deputy Director CUSP, James Warren Karuru Reed, CUSP Student, Professor Maria Liakata, University of Warwick
Moderator: Stanley Litow, VP Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs, IBM
The maturation of smart devices, smarter networks and powerful analytics allow cities to solve critical problems, faster and more effective than in the past. Intelligent software tools and advanced computing technologies provide, for the first time ever, the ability to sort through the immense streams of data generated by cities and their dwellers, and make a real impact on our quality of life. In the past, analyzing such data was a role for mathematicians and statisticians alone. Today, the skills needed to manage, analyze and convert Big Data into meaningful insight are in short supply as more jobs require data-driven responsibilities. According to Gartner, Big Data demand will create more than 4.4-million jobs globally by 2015 — only one-third of which will be filled. The U.S. Department of Labor projects a 25 percent growth in the need for workers trained in analytics through 2018 in the U.S. alone.
The education industry must team up with the private sector to deliver curricula aimed to prepare the students heading back to school with the right data-driven skills for next century jobs -- from a Chief Data Officer, to a health data analyst to make sense of millions of medical records or an insurance analyst to identify trends that indicate fraud. Across all industries, employers are seeking the skills and people who can uncover insights from vast amounts of data -- insights that generate revenue, open the door to new markets, save money, and even save lives -- the biggest benefactor being cities where these employers and educators reside in.
This panel explores the changing skill sets needed for evolution toward Smarter Cities; showcasing the successful collaborations and public and private partnerships that address the needs of cities by shrinking the growing skills gap in STEM fields of study.
