Korea′s trade volume with ASEAN jumped 16-fold from some eight-billion U.S. dollars in 1989 to 135 billion dollars last year... making ASEAN Korea′s second-largest trade partner. The region is also the number three investment destination for Korean businesses, after the United States and China. President Park proposed diversifying their economic cooperation into the service sector beyond the energy and manufacturing sectors, showing a willingness to lift regulations if necessary. "If you tell us which sectors are in need of regulatory reform, we will discuss this with ASEAN countries and reflect them in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership negotiations." These proposals introduced by President Park... are part of Korea′s efforts to reach a target trade volume of 200 billion dollars with ASEAN by the year 2020.
