Nearly 40 years ago Betty was a Grand Valley State College student eager to sail on the Calypso with Jacques Cousteau and save the world. Since then, she's counted garbage bags, measured noise levels, categorized land uses, traced PCB evidence, inventoried local parks, labeled hazardous waste drums, prepared community plans, applied for wastewater permits, developed K-12 curriculum on solid waste, surveyed taxpayers, presided over landfill controversies, organized environmental remediation, interpreted environmental laws, managed chemical spills, compiled social indicators for water-sheds, researched coastal wind farms, and amassed reams of environmental paper-work. Along the way,she's learned a few things about sustainability and saving the world.
