Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has begun plans to build the first ever fully functioning Hyperloop tube transportation system along five miles of recently secured land in central California beginning next year.
Elon Musk’s revolutionary tube-based transportation concept called Hyperloop has moved another step closer to becoming a reality.
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has just landed a five-mile stretch of property in central California’s Quay Valley on which it will develop a full-scale version of the system beginning in 2016.
The company is not supported by the Tesla Motors and SpaceX visionary but is instead using the ideas in his August 2013 paper documenting the above-ground, high-speed transit tube system.
Instead of reaching speeds of 760 miles per hour as noted in the research, HTT’s fully functioning, passenger carrying, five-mile-long version is expected to reach around 200 miles an hour due to its short track.
The company’s CEO estimates that the project will take about three years with a total cost of around $100 million to complete.
Though his company has thus far been financed largely through crowdfunding, the bulk of this capital will likely come from an initial public offering to be held later this year.
Musk has announced plans to build his own Hyperloop track in Texas, though it may be a more scaled-down version to test pod prototypes.
